CanvasPop’s “1197″ Experience: 1st Mobile Phone Photography Conference

On Saturday, October 22, the first mobile phone photography conference was held in San Francisco. Dubbed “1197″ after the first camera phone photo that was taken on June 11, 1997, it was a solid day filled with interesting speakers and amazing photos. Fresh off of our review about the amazing photo quality of the new iPhone 4S camera, our love for printing iPhone photos drew us to California.

CanvasPop was on scene mingling and meeting with the who’s who of the mobile photography world including Blurb, Postagram, PostalPix, Photojojo and of course, Instagram. Notable presenters include:

Jessica Zollman, Instagram’s Community Evangelist and 1197 co-creator. Jessica talked about the explosion in social photography that has occurred alongside the growing popularity of smart phones.  She says “taking photos is one thing, but what we do with them afterwards is just as important.”

Lauren Lemon is one of Mashable’s Top 15 Instagram Photographers. As an in-demand photographer, Lauren spoke about how mobile photography supplements her work and her portfolio. Have you ever thought to use behind-the-scenes iPhone photos attract a wider audience? She does!

Teru Kuwayama is a well-known photographer and 2010 TED Fellow who shot iPhone photos of the war in Afghanistan. He shared his experiences as part of a small team of mobile media operators that were embedded with a battalion, transmitting their reports and reflections from the battalion’s area of operations.
