Check out this Design Tip from one of the CanvasPop Graphic Designers, Mallory Giles.
With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I’m sure many of you are scrambling to find unique and thoughtful ways to show your special someone just how much they mean to you. In this quick and easy tutorial, I’ll show you how to design a heart vignette in Photoshop. It takes just a few minutes to complete, and will surely take your Valentine’s breath away! It’s also a great photo effect for your next canvas print.
Step One: Open your favourite pic of you two in Photoshop, and using your ‘custom shape tool’, create a heart shape around the couple. You can make it big or small, it’s up to you. In this design, I’m doing it just around the couple’s heads.
Step Two: Right click on your heart shape layer and ‘rasterize’ it. This will make it completely editable. Go to ‘Select’ on your top menu, then ‘Inverse’. You’ll notice the area around the heart is now selected. Using your paint bucket tool, fill this new layer with any colour you like. Since this image is black and white, I’m going to keep it simple and use black. Once you’re happy with your heart background, you can hide or delete the original heart layer.
Step Three: At this point, if you like, you can leave it as a solid background, or you can amp it up a bit. In this case, I have brought my opacity down to 70% and created a slight motion blur to add some movement to the design.
And that’s it, you’re done! Valentine’s Day solved.
