Snapseed is one of our favorite photography apps, we’ve recommended it a few times in the past on our blog. With it’s awesome editing capabilities, and cool filters — it’s no wonder Snapseed is a must have for avid iPhoneographers. Developed by Nik Software Inc., the app is both critically acclaimed and award winning! It took home the honor of “iPad App of the Year” in 2011. Via The Beginner’s Lens:
What’s so great about it? First, the interface is unlike any other on the market (that we’ve seen). It takes but a moment or two to familiarize yourself with the way it works, and once you get to grips with it, you’ll realize the functions are perfectly built for the iPhone. The interface is fully gestural, and by that we mean it uses the same gestures you use to do everything else on the iPhone…swipe left and right or up and down, or pinch and zoom. After having chosen an edit to make from the menu, swipe up and down to bring up the detailed editing menu, swipe right to increase the effect, and swipe left to decrease the effect. If the effect you’ve chosen has a focal point or a starting point you simply tap to add the point while using pinch and zoom to increase or decrease the radius…If you get stuck, the layover help guide will give you basic reminders to get you back on track.
There’s a fairly hefty amount of editing features included in the app, with both automatic and manual options. Auto Correct is very useful for a quick boost, but in terms of manual adjustments Selective Adjust is the star player. It essentially works as a basic masking tool giving you the ability to select specific points of your image to boost the brightness, saturation, and contrast while leaving the rest untouched. There’s no fiddly selection process, Snapseed makes the choice for you given the information in the photograph. You retain control over the size of the area being effected, and Snapseed does the rest. This feature is perfect for anyone frustrated with the layering and masking process of some of the other high end editing apps out there, making it ideal for beginners looking to understand more about selective editing.
There is also a good selection of filters already included in the app, the main filter options are Black & White, Vintage, Drama, Grunge, Center Focus, and Tilt Shift. Each filter also has several options and is fully adjustable making them very flexible indeed…To conclude, if you’re in the market for a top quality editing app that provides great results in a totally unique and easy to grasp interface, Snapseed is perfect for you.
Currently the app is only available for your iPhone or iPad, but stay tuned for the Android version which will be launching soon! It retails for $4.99, and based on our experience, it’s worth every penny.
