Bokeh is the art of capturing a photograph with a soft, and out-of-focus background — it’s the way your lens renders out-of-focus points of light. If done correctly, the results are often a very silky, smooth, and aesthetically pleasing kind of shot. Bokeh photos make for some stunning photo to canvas prints, we see dozens of great ones leave our offices each week. To achieve this kind of shot you need to use a very fast lens, with a large aperture. You increase your chances of visible bokeh in your photo by widening the distance between your subject and the background, and decreasing the distance between the camera and the subject.
To show-case this style of photography, we went on a hunt through the pages of Flickr’s creative commons to find some great bokeh shots to share with you. Which one of our picks is your favorite? Share with us in the comments!
