Mobile Monday is a weekly CanvasPop blog series featuring reviews on some of the coolest mobile photography apps available. Check back on Mondays for a new review!
We’ve been having a ton of fun playing around with the iOS app Percolator this past week, which was created by the clever people over at Tinrocket. We love the app so much, we were inspired to use it to create a 16×24″ canvas print which is pictured below. The app allowed us to take a photo of Times Square in NYC, and turn it into an interesting and unique piece of art — which is what we like doing best.
Percolator has a great retro vibe to it’s user interface which we’re really digging, and as you can probably guess by the name, it’s also completely coffee-themed. The premise of the app is to turn your photos into a multicolored, circle-based mosaic. Tinrocket mentions that “the mosaic technology used in Percolator is based on a proprietary circle packing algorithm.”
Once you fire up the app you’ll be prompted to either take a new photo, or grab an existing image from your phone’s camera roll. The app will automatically upload the image for you once selected, and will begin it’s “percolating”, or mosaic-making process. It’s pretty cool to see it work it’s magic. When complete you get to begin customizing your image to suit your personal tastes. You can adjust the size and appearance of the circles, play around with the color schemes, and even add a star themed overlay instead. Add a vignette to the photo, and play around with the tone and texture of the image to really make it your own.
If you’re satisfied with your newly percolated image, click on the in app heart icon to share it with your friends via Twitter, Facebook, or e-mail. You could also do what we did and save it to create a cool print. We were really impressed with the image quality that the app gave us, the resolution was absolutely perfect for a canvas print.
The app is available for iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch running iOS 4.3 or greater, at a cost of only $1.99. Stay tuned for the apps latest update, version 2.3, which should be available any day now. Have you tried out Percolator yet? We’d love it if you shared your take on the app with us!
