We may have just discovered the perfect app for the color and design enthusiast! Adobe Kuler allows you to capture color inspiration from the world around you, with your very own iPhone camera. It’s fun, innovative, and the perfect tool for artists, developers, designers, and photographers. Let us explain further:
Kuler’s main function is to create color themes, that you can easily import to Adobe Illustrator for future use in your designs. You have three options for creating your color themes with your iPhone: you can use the in app color wheel, your camera, or you can import images from your camera roll, Flickr, or Google.
The color wheel option allows you to drag small circles around the wheel, and literally create millions of your very own custom themes. You can choose one color to start and generate a multi-colored palette using standard rules such as monochromatic, triad, complimentary, or shades. Further customize individual colors on your palette by adjusting their hex values to your liking.
The camera mode is easily the best part about Kuler. Fire up the app, and point the camera anywhere you see color that you would like to capture — artwork, inspiring spaces, nature. The dominant colors that are in focus will automatically be picked up. Click the screen to freeze the image, and either accept the colors chosen or drag around the on-screen circles to zone in on the desired hues. The theme will automatically save for you once you click the check-mark in the middle of the screen.
If you have an image on your camera roll, Flickr account, or Google that you’d prefer to create themes from instead you can complete this exact same color extraction process. When in camera mode simply switch over from the “eye” icon, to the “camera” icon in the lower right hand corner to import the image you wish to use.
All of the themes that you create in app are automatically saved and can be named, tagged, and shared via Twitter or e-mail. They are automatically synced to your web account, and Adobe Creative Cloud. Adobe is currently working on new updates that will allow you to integrate Kuler with all of your workspaces including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and any other program you subscribe to in the cloud.
Adobe Kuler is currently available for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch with an iOS of 5.1 or later. The app is free to download for the time being, but this could be subject to change soon since it’s brand new release.
