Photo of Instagram Canvases

We’d like to thank our friends at Instagram, who picked our new Instagram canvas prints as the top item on their Black Friday Holiday Gift Guide:

Has a friend ever asked for the original version of a beautiful Instagram photo you took so they could use it as the background on their phone? Have your parents been ranting and raving to all of their friends about how wonderful your Instagram images are to anyone who will listen? If so, CanvasPop’s Instagram printing addition is the perfect holiday gift!

We’re stoked with how these canvases have taken off! Watch for them in more upcoming gift guides now that the “season of giving” has officially launched.

On Saturday, October 22, the first mobile phone photography conference was held in San Francisco. Dubbed “1197″ after the first camera phone photo that was taken on June 11, 1997, it was a solid day filled with interesting speakers and amazing photos. Fresh off of our review about the amazing photo quality of the new iPhone 4S camera, our love for printing iPhone photos drew us to California.

CanvasPop was on scene mingling and meeting with the who’s who of the mobile photography world including Blurb, Postagram, PostalPix, Photojojo and of course, Instagram. Notable presenters include:

Jessica Zollman, Instagram’s Community Evangelist and 1197 co-creator. Jessica talked about the explosion in social photography that has occurred alongside the growing popularity of smart phones.  She says “taking photos is one thing, but what we do with them afterwards is just as important.”

Lauren Lemon is one of Mashable’s Top 15 Instagram Photographers. As an in-demand photographer, Lauren spoke about how mobile photography supplements her work and her portfolio. Have you ever thought to use behind-the-scenes iPhone photos attract a wider audience? She does!

Teru Kuwayama is a well-known photographer and 2010 TED Fellow who shot iPhone photos of the war in Afghanistan. He shared his experiences as part of a small team of mobile media operators that were embedded with a battalion, transmitting their reports and reflections from the battalion’s area of operations.

The gallery featured photos from several artists including Tyson Wheatley, Richard Koci Hernandez, Liz Eswein and DocPop himself, all printed courtesy of CanvasPop.

We really saw the power of mobile photography and how it has grown up. Mobile photos truly are art now! Take a stroll through the CanvasPop gallery below.

iPhone 4S Canvas Print Review

In case you didn’t know, we love our Apple products at CanvasPop and we specialize in printing iPhone photos. So naturally, we were seriously excited about the upcoming release of the iPhone 4S on October 14. It’s faster and it has better graphics performance but the most noticeable upgrade – the one that we’re the most excited about — is the totally revamped 8-megapixel camera!

Now, all this hype is great, but the true test of image quality is what we do every day here: printing iPhone photos to canvas. We work with all kinds of images from different phones and there are any number of places where an image from a smartphone can go wrong. From grainyness to dull, muted colours, lack of definition, the list goes on. When Apple released several sample images of just what the 4S is capable of producing, there was no way that we could resist seeing how they printed.

iPhone 4S Canvas Print Review

Lo and behold, the printed image came out stellar. Even enlarged to a final size of 18″ x 24″, it retained all of its detail with not even a hint of a pixel showing in the finished print.

Apple has nailed it by totally changing the optics of the iPhone’s camera. Normally, when it comes to imaging, people get really excited about how many megapixels a camera can capture. What’s actually more important is the quality of the sensor behind the lens. That’s what absorbs all of the light information which comprises a photo. The 4S includes a better sensor along with a wider aperture. A wider aperture means the camera is more capable of recieving light. More light means — once again — more detail.

It’s entirely possible that the iPhone 4S comes loaded with one of the highest quality onboard cameras in any smartphone to date. Imagine the endless possibilities.

Canvas for charity 2

CanvasPop’s own Andrew Rashotte recently organized an absolutely awesome charity event at The Standard that mixed what we think are the finer things in life: canvas printing, photography, lots of friends, and helping sick kids.

Andrew and his crew contacted 10 skate photographers reaching from Ottawa to Los Angeles and asked them to donate one photo each for the event. These were then put on canvas by CanvasPop and displayed at a silent auction at The Standard, with all the proceeds going to the Make-a-Wish foundation.

The event was a huge success and raised nearly $2500 for the charity, and we’re so proud to have been part of it!

Vancouver riots kiss

Richard Lam for Getty Images

While browsing the news this morning we came across this very viral photo taken by Richard Lam (Getty) of a couple kissing during the Vancouver riots. There’s a lot of buzz surrounding the image with people drawing links between that and the famous sailor’s kiss photo taken during the 1945 V-J Day celebrations by Alfred Eisenstaedt.

What an interesting contrast - what do you think?

On Thursday, May 27th, 2010 Toronto’s Hope House Fundraiser aims to raise $50,000 for Hope House, a school in Calcutta being built by the Kids With Cameras Foundation, a charity born from the Academy Award Winning documentary ‘Born into Brothels’.

Each photo canvas featured at this special fundraiser represents a personal story of self-discovery and empowerment through the photographic works of the children (a skill taught to them by Co-Director and on screen presence Zana Briski)… Read More about the Hope House Fundraiser.

A contrast in realism! You see elements of Heine's caricature in this Pencil vs. Camera

Fitting? Yes…Creative? Absolutely!!… I just had share the artistic works of Ben Heine
a Belgian painter, illustrator, portraitist, caricaturist and photographer from Brussels.

This particular image is part of his “Pencil vs. Camera” series that combines photos with
pencil drawings by superimposing the sketch onto the photo.  Ben will take his own photos
and consider the image as a battle between the drawing and the photograph.

“The great thing is that the photo and drawing are 2 different ways of expression but they go
well together and they definitely have the same purpose: share an idea, an emotion, a
concept or a message
.” Ben Heine
